Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra

I have gone to rehearsals with this orchestra every Sunday (starting 09/12) from 1:30-5 except for the following days:

10/16
11/28
12/19
12/26
01/02
01/23
02/06

I also had concerts on the 11/13 and 10/16 at the Orange County Performing Arts Center.

Other

Small jazz combo at Mt Sac that rehearsed once a week  with Mr. Elwood (the head of the jazz department), and performed on 11/29.

Several rehearsals and a performance for a friends recital, involving musicians from Mt Sac, CSU Long Beach, and working professionals.

MUS 16 was a percussion ensemble that actually met from 4:30-6:35 (the schedule is wrong) every Wednesday, and also included a 1/2 hour lesson every week. I missed this class 3 times but don't have the exact dates.

final grades

Literal

a) I, Lindsey Eastham, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work.
b) I completed gajillion hours or rehearsal, that led to several performances, and to me becoming a better musician.

Interpretive

Although it takes a ton of preparation to prepare for any concert, there were a few concerts that I spent a lot of time practicing and rehearsing for. Michael's recital was pretty challenging, there were many late rehearsals, and I had to transcribe a lot of the parts. Here are some of the recordings (I was playing vibraphone):

Intrinsic
Shade of Jade

The PSYO concerts were also very challenging, because the rehearsals and performances are so high pressure.

Applied

I was able to apply all of the theories and topics discussed in my research to my practice, rehearsal, and performance. This was especially helpful in PSYO where we discuss a lot about the composition and how we should perform it, similar to the topics I will be covering in my 20 min presentation.  In my personal practice, I was inclined to research more about the composers, and their intentions. I have already seen a positive impact on my playing.

I have too many pictures.

and I spent to long finding them to not put them on here. :)

  1. Grade: P+

Pros: I think it's fantastic that you have such a strong dedication to music and that you have taken it upon yourself to research the background of the musician whose music you are performing; not simply leaving this work in the hands of your composer.

Cons: Shade of Jade was a lovely piece and I am curious to know what the process of playing looks like from your perspective. A video of your performance would have rounded out this blog post nicely. Also, since you are dedicated to doing background research on an artist, an analysis of Shade of Gray would have been appropriate here.
